Gone too soon

Alex Isik (1974-2020)

With Deepest Sympathy we acknowledge the passing of one of our own – Greenhithe City striker Alex Isik “Gone too Soon”. The following is reproduced with kind permission from his team mate Lee Philo,

“It is with such sadness that we mourn the loss of a great friend, team-mate, husband and father of two, Alex Isik (46 years). On the evening of Wednesday 16th December 2020, shortly after returning home from a social game of football at Wainoni Park, Greenhithe, Alex suffered a massive heart attack and died.

Alex inspired, motivated and always played to win. His generous financial support of the team was legendary. In 2016, after the first game of the season, and a couple of beers… Alex boisterously floated the idea that if we won the league that year he would pay for the teams’ airfares to Fiji. With that incentive we went on to be unbeaten, Alex winning the Golden Boot, and those that were able ended up at a resort in Fiji!

Alex was passionate about football. A great team player, skilled, with the ability to seemingly pull goals out of the hat at times. In fact, he was due to be awarded the team trophy for 2020 Goal of the Season for an absolute stunner scored at Starling Park, Oratia. Alex was a larger than life character. His love for life was evident in everything he did. His caring, warm, friendly and easy-going nature will be truly missed. In his business life Alex was driven, a calculated risk taker, incredibly successful, a passionate restaurateur and exceptional businessman, setting up 36 cafes and restaurants across the Auckland region in just over 12 years. Taken too early. We’ll miss you mate. “
