Week 1 – Results & Write Up

The results are in: ASFA 2017, Week 1 – Results

The defending Premiership champions, the Patriot, got off to a winning start away at Inter (1-2), whilst there was also opening day 3-1 wins for both Auckland Volcanoes and Auckland Wanderers, against Indy and the newly promoted Bohs Celtics 2.  Bohs Celtics 1 are sitting pretty at the top of the league, however, following their 5-1 victory over Zamantix Rovers .

In the Championship, there were wins for the two University team’s, UoAFC and AUT FC 1, both of whom will be looking for an immediate return back to the Premiership. The battle of the two newly promoted teams KTB and United FC ended in a 3-3 draw, which was the same scoreline of the other game in this division between Kingsland Athletic and City Fringe.

In League 1, HNK opened their ASFA account with a 3-0 default win over the UoAFC Reserves (who went to the wrong field?), whilst the new Auckland Wanderers second team also secured 3 points on their debut, beating Nixon Park 4-3. The other games saw Kamarak get the better of AUT FC Reserves 4-2, whilst Zamantix Rovers Return and Dalian played out a 2-2 draw.

In League 2, there were 3-1 wins for both Zamantix Force and Aotea Sport Eastern over Auckland Unicorns and Double Rum Greenhithe, whilst U-Striker scored six against All Red FC.  The stand out result of the opening round, however, was played out between Viti and Massey-Albany, with the home team recording a jaw-dropping 17-3 victory against the students from the North Shore.

Finally, as if the return of Masters football to the ASFA wasn’t exciting enough, the sight of Wynton Rufer in an Old Fullas FC shirt suggests that the new boys from Waiheke could be the team to beat this year. They opened their ASFA account with a 3-1 win over Serious FC, whilst Old Fella’s (that’s going to get confusing) recorded a 3-0 win over Greenhithe City. Sitting top of the table after the first round, however, are the old boys of Zamantix Rovers, who opened their season with a 4-0 win over the boys2men team from Pukekohe.
