Firstly, Congratulations to Kiwi True Blues for claiming the 2017 Championship title on the final day of the season.
Sadly, for KTB and AUT FC, the two-horse title race was ultimately decided by the actions of the team that sat at the top of the league for several months of the season but ended up finishing third. Admittedly, I am not aware of the circumstances that led to United FC being unable to field a team for this final game, but their decision to hand KTB a 3-0 win not only prevented the league leaders from celebrating their success on the football field, but also ended AUT FC’s hopes of returning to the Premiership as Champions, despite them beating City Fringe 6-1 in their final fixture. It also prevented Jamie McGookin (16 goals) the opportunity to catch and overtake Suhail Ali (18 goals) in the race for the Golden Boot.
The final fixture of the 2017 Premiership season, Auckland Wanderers versus Zamantix Rovers, finished with a 2-1 win to Rovers. The result denied Wanderers the opportunity to move above Independiente, ensuring they finished their first season in the Premiership in sixth.
Champions Viti FC and runners up Double Rum Greenhithe contested the final fixture of the League 2 season, with the Champions securing a comfortable 7-1 victory that ensured they finished unbeaten with an eleven-point cushion at the top.
Waiheke Old Fullas and Zamantix Rovers Old Boys both go into the final league fixture of the 2017 ASFA season with the chance to finish as runners up behind newly crowned champions Old Fellas. Waiheke won their penultimate game against Serious FC 2-1. I will use next week’s Round Up to provide the score of this sole remaining fixture, as well as preview the following weekend’s Finals Day action.
