The long wait is almost over… pre-season is almost over… the start of the Auckland Sunday Football Association’s 43rd season is only days away and, whilst we have bid farewell to a number of teams, we are pleased to so many familiar names and faces returning once again.
Internationale, the 2017 Double Winners, and 2018 Charity Shield winners, start the defence of the Premiership Trophy on the North Shore, away at AUT FC (back in the top division after a year in the Championship). Last year’s Championship winners, Kiwi True Blues, kick off their first season in the Premiership away at Auckland Wanderers.
Having already secured the Community Plate with a 9-0 win over Zamantix Rovers Return, HNK Auckland start their attempt at back-to-back promotions at home to Western Wanderers FC, one of the eight new teams playing their first ASFA fixture this weekend.
Last year’s Masters Champion’s, Old Fellas FC, also kick things off against a new entrant, Viet NZ.
Sunday will see us welcome eight new teams into the competition, two of which will be playing in our Over 35s Masters Conference. Sadly, the withdrawal of Boys 2 Men, however, means that there are only seven teams in this league, giving one team a week off each sunday. This week it’s Greenhithe City.
Farewell and thank you to everyone from Kingsland Athletic, SudAmerica, Auckland Wanderers 2, Uni of Auckland Reserves, Viti FC, Massey Albany FC and Boys To Men Pukekohe.
Welcome to everyone from Western Wanderers, FC Eagles, Waitakere Rangers, Albany Green Machine, Korean Tigers, Viet Stars FC, Viet NZ and, urm???, the Sperm Whales (really?!).
As with last year, please look to our facebook page for daily updates, the draw, results, league table’s etc… it is also the place for teams to try and recruit new players. I’d urge all managers to take another look of the rules and regulations ahead of the first game, as there have been a few changes made over the summer.
Rich’s Round Up (aka the Doc’s Diagnosis) will be returning for a second season, and the ASFA website will continue to be used as a place to promote our competition and our clubs to a wider audience.
let the game’s commence… play fair, respect the referees, and don’t forget to email us your match cards asap!
